Abstract
OBJECTIVE
To evaluate the clinical and pathological characteristics of immature teratoma of the ovary. METHODS: Twenty four patients who were treated with immature teratoma of the ovary between Febuary 1994 and Febuary 2004 were reviewed retrospectively for clinicopathologic characteristics, treatment, and outcomes. RESULTS: The mean age at diagnosis was 21.4+/-10.5 years. Tumors were 79.2% (19/24) stage I, 8.3% (2/24) stage II, 12.5% (3/24) stage III, and 0% (0/24) stage IV. Pathologic grade 1 was 8, grade 2 was 12, grade 3 was 4. Twenty one of 24 patients underwent the conservative surgery including unilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, unilateral oophorectomy and others were performed the total abdominal hysterectomy with bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy. Eighteen patients were received adjuvant combination chemotherapy. One patient had disease recurrence and two patients had died at the time of review. The median overall survival is 123.1 months (SE 8.0, 95% CI 107.5-138.7) and significantly longer in less advanced stage (I and II) and low grade (1 and 2). CONCLUSION: Immature teratoma of the ovary should be treated with primary conservative surgery and cisplatin-based combination chemotherapy. Less advanced stage and low grade tumors have a significantly good prognosis.
Key Words: Immature teratoma, Ovary
