Abstract |
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study is to assess the effect of 1 year of treatment with tibolone on bone mineral density [BMD] in postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis. METHODS: Fifty postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoporosis entered a 1 year randomized study of treatment with tibolone 2.5mg/day. BMD of lumbar spine [L2-L4] was assessed by dual energy absorptiometry at baseline, 6 months, and 12 months. Serum FSH and E2 level were also assessed at baseline and 12 months. RESULTS: BMD at the studied site after 12 months of tibolone [0.81+/-0.09 g/cm2] was significantly higher as compared to baseline [0.76+/-0.09 g/cm2]. The gain of BMD was 6.6% [p<0.05]. Serum FSH and E2 values were remained stable as compared to baseline. CONCLUSION: This study suggests that tibolone treatment in postmenopausal women with osteopenia or osteoposis is effective. |
